Canton Planning Board Approves Gym Project, Sets Historic Door Conditions
Planning Board · Meeting of July 14, 2026
Canton Planning Board approves downtown gym project and sets design conditions on a historic-district door. The board voted unanimously at its July 14 meeting to accept plans for a 24-hour swipe-entry gym, clearing an impasse over a 20-foot river setback that fell short of the 50-foot standard after the Zoning Board of Appeals ruled the variance acceptable. The board also found the project's 11-space parking lot sufficient, citing a nearby municipal lot and on-street overflow.
In a second action, the board addressed a request to replace the front door at 51 Main Street with a plain steel door, declining to approve the proposal without conditions and directing instead that any replacement must maintain the existing glass area and double transom, include architectural detailing, and be painted within the town's historic color palette — citing zoning section 325-21(E), which bars any diminishment of windows or doors. Board Chair David McCarthy summarized: "The material isn't so important than the design." A board member also reported that the long-stalled Jubilee site demolition had completed its federal NEPA environmental review and that demolition remains anticipated before the end of 2026.
