Canton Town Board Approves Sewer Environmental Declaration, Residents Demand Building Accessibility
Town Board · Meeting of July 15, 2026
Canton residents confront Town Board over long-standing disability access failures at the municipal building. At the July 15 meeting, more than eight speakers described barriers including a malfunctioning lift, inaccessible police station stairs required to obtain disability parking placards, and parking spaces that one speaker said do not meet ADA dimensional requirements. Tatiana, a wheelchair user and 25-year Canton resident, told the board, "You had 36 years to make this building accessible," while physical therapist Susan Mitchell called the stair requirement to obtain placards "a really big liability" risk.
The board, noting the building is jointly managed with the village, said the comments would be forwarded and that a joint meeting on July 29 already has building issues on its agenda. Separately, the board voted unanimously to approve a negative environmental declaration for its stormwater sewer project, authorized travel for staff to fall training in Saratoga and a community workshop in Burlington, and entered executive session on police contract negotiations.
